December 26, Monday
Depart Los Angeles at 2:25 PM for an overnight flight to Israel. (Stop in Toronto)
Day 2:
December 27, Tuesday
Arrive Tel Aviv at 3:55 PM, greeted by our local tour guide and transferred to our Bed and Breakfast Inn. Relax to get ready for our exciting itinerary. Overnight and dinner in Tel Aviv.
Day 3:
December 28, Wednesday
After breakfast we will tour Jaffa, the oldest port in the world and city of Jonah, where Peter had his house-top experience at the home of Simon, the Tanner. We continue along the coast of the Mediterranean to Caesarea, capital of the Roman Procurators of Judea. We visit the Roma port, Byzantine churches, the Theater and Aqueduct. Then we'll continue north to the Carmel Mountains, where Elijah defeated the false prophets of Baal. We drive to the Druze village and have lunch in the market. Continue to Haifa for a breathtaking view of the bay and the famous Bahai Gardens. Continue on for dinner and overnight at Karei Desheh (north of the Sea [Lake] of Galilee).
Day 4:
December 29, Thursday
After breakfast, we head to upper Galilee, visiting the Golan Heights and on to visit Dan and see where Jesus traveled (ancient Caesarea Philippi) at the foot of Mt. Hermon. Here, at the source of the Jordan River, was a holy place dedicated to Pan, the heathen god of pastures, flocks and shipyards. Here, Jesus won a ringing profession of faith from Peter. We continue on to the mystic town of Safed. Today we'll make a beautiful observation of upper and lower Galilee. We'll visit an artistic art district where we'll have enough time for shopping. We'll walk through the old town, visiting the old synagogues from the 16th century. We'll go back to Karei Desheh for dinner and overnight.
Day 5:
December 30, Friday
This morning we'll take an unforgettable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. We'll visit Caprnaum and see the remains of the ancient synagogue built 2,000 years ago. We'll go on to Tabgha and the Mount of Beatitudes, believed site of the Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. We'll continue driving along the Jordan River to Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus, where he studied and worked. We'll go back to Karei Desheh for a Shabbat (greeting of the Sabbath) dinner and overnight.
Day 6:
December 31, Saturday
This morning we'll be traveling to the ancient Phoenician city of Acre, where we'll explore this ancient town and have lunch. We'll stop for a time of worship during our exploration. Then we'll be taking a long ride down to the Dead Sea, stopping at a few places along the way. We hope to arrive just before the sun sets on this beautiful salt sea. We'll be taking a quick "dip" and learn that sinking is not possible. (Also, this is New Year's Eve so we'll be doing some celebrating with the locals!) We'll be at a local hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 7:
January 1, Sunday
We'll rise to a new year and a fantastic breakfast before we leave for Masada where we hike up the snake trail path or ascend by cable car to the last stronghold of the Jewish Zealots. Here we see Herod's palace ruins, storerooms, Roman bath, ancient cisterns and synagogue. After a short break for lunch we continue to Ein Gedi Oasis. Ein Gedi is frequently mentioned in the Bible. David hid here from Saul and Solomon sang of it in the Song of Songs. We continue to Qumran, the ancient Essene settlement that overlooks the caves where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. Then on to the Beduin village, Havat Hanokdin, for a true Middle East (Abrahamic) adventure. After dinner enjoy hospitality around a bonfire, singing and story telling. Overnight in tents (yes, we do have mattresses and privacy!) underneath the stars just as the patriarchs lived.
Day 8:
January 2, Monday
We'll enjoy breakfast and head to Jerusalem. Here we'll experience 3,000 years of history. The Old City is divided into four quarters: Jewish, Christian, Moslem and Armenian. We walk along Via Dolorosa, to the Jewish Quarters, see the Western Wall, the digs (new discoveries), Mt. Zion, the Citadel and more. We will be walking in the footsteps of history, since the time of King David, and witness the influence of the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Moslems, Crusaders and the Turks. We relive the era of the Bible, unforgettable, emotional and spiritual. See the Dome of the Rock, Mosque El Aqsa, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Garden Tomb. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 9:
January 3, Tuesday
This morning we visit the New City of Jerusalem, Mount Zion, the Upper Room, the Tomb of King David, and the Model City. At the Shrine of the Book, we see the Dead Sea scrolls. We continue to the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) on to the promenade overlooking Jerusalem for an incredible view of the city. Then to visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial Museum. We hope to continue to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity, Crusaders Cloister, and visit the shepherds’ fields. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 10:
January 4, Wednesday
On our last day we visit the Mount of Olives for a panoramic view of Jerusalem. Visit the tombs of Qidron Valley including Absalom’s Pillar. We continue to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of Nations. Finish up your last-minute shopping and then enjoy a farewell dinner. In the evening we will be transferred to the airport for an overnight flight to Los Angeles.
Day 11:
January 5, Thursday
At last we arrive home with unforgettable memories to cherish always. Knowing that we have walked in the footsteps of Jesus and the Christians will bring new meaning to our Bible study.
